Product description
Gabi’s tactile ceramic bowls are wheel-thrown and hand decorated. She experiments with form, surface texture and glazing to create individual pieces that are best experienced in the viewer’s palms. Her inspiration comes from nature, primarily her love of the sea.
After the pots are bone-dry, I fire them to 1060 C degree, so they remain porous enough to take up glazes thickly. I use earthenware brush-on glazes for these turquoise, blue and green pots, as I can layer them to create different hues of blue, add stripes, different effects and leave space for the gold rim, which is also an earthenware glaze and is applied at the same time as the main body glazes. I also use cobalt carbonate and copper carbonate oxides, applied on top of the glazes with a brush, to achieve more variation in surface decoration. The copper carbonate works as a flux for the cobalt – together they flow down the surface of the pots and create individual patterns. The “flow” in the decoration depends partly on the thickness of the base glaze and on the shape of the pot, therefore no two pieces are the same after firing.
