Product description
I am based in Sheffield and within Yorkshire Art Space . My painting practice has involved years of finding my way in abstract form to refer to nature and the elements. Also over years the need to be overt and figurative has been strong , and this has helped my abstract paintings develop as well, more around the subject and less to do with modernism . I love depth in painting and this is why oil paint is such a gift . Above all the the silent medium of paint is a place of freedom , and the chance to express things hard to say like a glimmer of a memory or a sense of presence or a feeling of being next to hugeness or to be in some kind of contact with ineffable things -as one can be in wild places but also in town where light may fall on some trash on the ground and look so fine. The flight of a wren the discovery of lamb’s wool on wire the sight of two twigs as a cross on the side of the track on the Camino , these kinds of encounter are also some of the tangibles I like to aim for in my work .
I always have to use layers to build depth . I will add paint sometimes in a spirit of let’s wait and see even with a subject waiting using brush primarily but also a twig to sputter paint or flick it or handy piece of wrinkled cling film to partially remove or a pice of ripped card as a palette knife ; wet on wet is so nice when all kinds of merging are possible but also highlights on dried paint when one returns after a time. Another technique is the hands off process of being quiet and letting the painting ‘speak’ to oneself / let new ways in come
