This painting is similar to the Barge painting and the interest in the shapes overall and perspective was what attracted me to it. Winter Barges Todmorden was again an immediate response to the subject. This composition was seen while walking along the towpath towards Todmorden. I wasn’t interested in making a representational copy of the scene, instead my aim was to create a new image. Once again the problem would be, how to do it.
The painting is made up of a mainly low key subdued palette in an attempt for the truth of nature. My paintings are made up of drawing. Drawing is the main element and so line is of great significance. I paint wet in wet building up the paint layers so there is a visible impasto.
