A Modern Bestiary
Animals - fact and fiction
Exploring the animal kingdom, real and imagined, through the eyes of artists with a personal and contemporary take on this fascinating genre it the basis of this new exhibition. A first for Water Street Gallery in our 10 years featuring animal creatures.
Steeped in tradition the Bestiary has compelled artists and writers from medieval times, through Victorian to the 21st century. Intended as moral instruction, the interaction of animals with humans is today at the forefront of our consciousness and conscience. From Bosch to Shelley, Picasso to Hurst it is one of the most ancient art themes known to man.
Seen from a different perspective of natural sciences, some artist will illustrate the macrocosm and microcosm - ‘the monster’ is to a large extent tamed to our minds, enjoyed through film and TV
Not only will you see amazing art works, but this will be an extended and interactive exhibition with poets, writers, workshops and the like.
