All my art is about layers, textures and colours. I like to think that all of my paintings have a 'history' built up in layers, some of which are hidden and some are revealed. Whether my subject is figurative or abstract there is an element of both these present within each and this dialogue produces a tension which provides excitement and challenge in each piece which I enjoy.
I work in all media, often beginning with acrylic and mixed media to build up the layers quickly and finishing with oil which gives the image a more lustrous and textured finish. Wiping and scraping back to reveal hidden 'secrets' are as much a part of my painting practice as putting on the paint and building up. I want the viewer to step towards my work, to examine the detail, become intrigued, ask questions and so form a deeper relationship with it as a piece of art rather than just an image.
