Image 1 / 1

In January 2018 I spent two weeks in Staithes.
I was lucky – everyday was crisp and cold, blue skies, hard frosts and snow.
Out walking along the cliffs each day, I revelled in the bitter wind, the soaring birds, the sea, the majestic cliffs and colourful rocks.
I stumbled upon the fishing huts at Port Mulgrave. I was intrigued by their variety, their shapes and textures and colours. It was an adventure each day to return there. I climbed and slid down the frost covered cliffs to draw the huts on the shoreline with their natural backdrop of blackthorn under azure skies. I admired the peace and beauty of the huts in this hidden oasis. I pondered on the history of the huts and the stories they could tell. The sketching needed to be quick before my fingers froze.
My artwork usually inhabits an imaginative, dream like place but always has its roots in the real world. In these pieces I have used an imaginative palette of colour whilst keeping the images representational and recognisable.
I work from my studio in Todmorden, West Yorkshire.
