Canal

The Canal - a Living Entity.

Just a stones throw from Water Street Gallery, Todmorden is the Rochdale canal - so why not make this a feature of an exhibition, and make a truly local exhibition, though venturing now and then beyond to Manchester through to Sowerby Bridge and onto the Huddersfield and Leeds / Liverpool waterways.
Since its conception in mid 18 C. the Rochdale canal has been a major and vital part of life in the Pennines.  The development of its heritage from industrial and commercial transport to tourism is a fascinating story and continues to reverberate
The vibrant summer life, the more sombre winters of life on and around the canal itself, the towpaths, locks and the famous Great Wall of Todmorden, as well barge life on and around the canal make for great subjects for artists.  Such moods are explored, and skilfully and enthusiastically interpreted in painting, drawings, prints, ceramics and 3D by artists Colin Binns, Kate Boyce Art, Barry Midgley, Shelley Burgoyne, Jane Burgess, Ian Taylor, John Cook Ceramics, Pete Marsh,  Mike Holcroft, Barry De More, Mike Major, Jenny Steel, Richard Wincer, Tony Bulley and Stephen Jowitt.
We are proud to 'show off' Todmordens great assets, so please join us to enjoy the exhibition of 50+ works.
A really special  addition to this 'Canal' exhibition enables you can engage in the backstories of these artworks, getting close the process of creation, and specially created trails,  with our QR codes attached to each artwork - working in collaboration with 'Fictioneers' media team.
