I am a sculptural ceramist who handbuilds all my work. I am influenced by contemporary pop, folk and ethnographic art. I fuse these sources together in a style I call "archaic pop”

For the Heat exhibition I am presenting work that particularly relies on the control of the firing process. Because of the high oxide content of the raw material, my black clay sculptures need careful controlled firing to prevent slumping and to achieve a timeless finish while my grogged stoneware pieces are over fired to 1280 C to achieve an intense lustrous red finish that is almost metallic.

I work with two clays. The first is a grogged stoneware clay which I over fire to 1280 C and decorate using slips, underglazes and metallic oxides, the second is black clay which I low fire to around 1120 C to keep control of the form and finish with metallic oxide washes to give a simple, elegant surface. I hand build all my work paying particular attention to the surface texture and pattern which I create using simple tools, sample from found objects, rollers and occasionally plaster or clay sprigs which I make myself. I free model the finer parts of my work such as a stag's head. None of my work is cast
