Carole Kirk

My inspiration comes from my own childhood photographs which have become my memories. I use the photograph as a starting point, allowing my physical gesture and the qualities of the materials to influence the painting.  Objects from the original photograph become symbolic props which take on new meanings.  I work intuitively, leaving out detail.  I’m interested in how this leaves ambiguity for the viewer to project their memories onto the paintings.  2010

Artist Statement

I create figurative paintings which explore identity, childhood development, and memory.  I work from family snapshots, asking questions about photography and its role in capturing the ‘truth’ of our past.
