Brendan Stuart Burns

Brendan Stuart Burns currently lives and works in Cardiff. He studied Fine Art at Cardiff College of Art and at The Slade School of Art. He has received many awards including twice winning the Gold Medal in Fine Art at The National Eisteddfod of Wales  and twice Welsh Artist of the Year. 

Early years saw engagement with the ferocious backdrop of a political issues, progressing to the arena of abstract expressionism,  and for the past 15 years he has linked early workings with  more reflective tendencies and memories in the landscape genre.  The masterful painterly nature of his work is inspired by  particular locations in west Wales, the changing rhythms of shoreline, rocks, sand, tide, light and horizon, constantly evolving. 

The intensity of his working process neither mimics  nor describes nature, but is closer to the experience of being immersed in nature, in  a multi-sensory melting pot not only visual, but also evoking taste, sound and touch. Following exhaustive documentation, yet vitally without the burden of preconceptions,  Burns builds works back in his studio, from large 10ft canvas to jewel like small scale works. Undoubtedly Burns engages the viewer in his transformative exploration and perceptive process, through the minds eye, to works of sublime contemplative beauty.
